Types of paper bags: a buyer's comparison
The right paper bag type depends on application, not aesthetics. Here is a direct breakdown of the main categories you will encounter when sourcing paper packaging solutions for US retail or food service operations.

Retail and gift bag formats
Retail paper bags — typically constructed from 100–157 GSM coated or uncoated kraft — are the most visible category in the US market. Paper shopping bags with twisted paper handles or flat ribbon handles are the default for apparel, specialty retail, and cosmetics. Paper gift bags occupy a related niche, usually with higher-quality surface treatments and shorter supply chain lead times from domestic distributors.

Custom printed paper bags in this category are where brand investment concentrates. Buyers should note that full-bleed four-color printing requires a minimum surface smoothness that uncoated natural kraft cannot always deliver. If brand color accuracy is critical, specifying coated white kraft at 120 GSM or above is standard practice among experienced packaging buyers.

Food service and SOS bag formats
SOS (square open sack) bags are the workhorses of food service paper bag packaging. They are self-opening, bottom-gusseted, and available in food grade paper bag versions that comply with direct-contact regulations. Brown paper bags in #4, #6, and #8 sizes dominate quick-service restaurant and grocery applications. For greasy or high-moisture content — fried foods, baked goods — buyers need to specify grease-resistant or moisture-resistant treatment, not simply assume standard kraft will perform.

Why do so many food operators get this wrong? Because food grade paper bags look identical to standard kraft from the outside. The difference is in the internal coating chemistry and, critically, whether the materials comply with FDA CFR 21 requirements for food-contact substances — a point addressed in detail in section 6 of this guide.

Industrial and multi-ply formats
Multi-ply paper bags — two to six layers of kraft paper, sometimes with interior polyethylene or foil liners — handle the heaviest loads and harshest contents. Common applications include pet food, fertilizers, cement, and chemical compounds. These are not typically custom printed paper bags in the brand-marketing sense; performance and durability dominate the specification sheet. Sourcing for this category almost always goes through a paper bag manufacturer with industrial-grade equipment, not a general packaging distributor.

Material specs: GSM, ply count, and handle types explained
This is the section most buyer guides skip. Understanding the relationship between GSM weight, ply construction, handle type, and load capacity is non-negotiable if you are making a specification-based purchasing decision rather than just reordering what you bought last year.

Handle type selection: more than an aesthetic choice
Twisted paper handles are the most cost-effective option for mid-range retail bags, and they perform adequately for loads under 12 lbs. Flat ribbon handles — made from either paper or polypropylene — offer a more premium look and are better suited for paper gift bags or luxury retail formats. Die-cut handles, punched directly into the bag body, eliminate attachment failure risk entirely but reduce the effective load capacity since the handle strength is limited by the bag's own GSM. Rope handles — cotton or jute — are increasingly popular among sustainable packaging materials advocates, and they carry a slight cost premium that many premium-brand buyers consider worthwhile.

Kraft paper bags vs. white SBS: know the difference
Kraft paper bags — made from unbleached sulfate pulp — offer superior tear resistance and are the default for wholesale paper bags in grocery and food service. Solid bleached sulfate (SBS) board bags deliver a cleaner white surface ideal for high-resolution custom printed paper bags but at higher per-unit cost and with slightly lower tensile strength. Just like choosing between concrete and marble for a floor, both work — but in very different contexts and at very different price points.
